Description

A guide to the Spindit Species

Spindits are a vertibrate species resembling insects that hail from the lost planet Kembyr, which Aurilex once called home. Characterized by their inquisitive nature and wirelike silk, they habe long been the companions of our beloved wandering folk, adjusting to life on other planets beside their Aurilex partners.

Spindits are hexapedal, with the front two legs facing forward and the hind legs facing back. Each limb ends in a hooflike claw and a sharp dewclaw, aiding in gripping the surfaces they travel across and defense. The four large eyes have twin pupils, horizontally stacked to create octocular vision. The lower mandable is split and the tongue is bristled, and each Spindit has a pair of feather-like antennae, used for smell, hearing, and detecting the pheramones the creatures use for communication. Spindits are intelligent but their level of sentience is unknown. The abdomin is marked woth a row of glowing patches which can be flared brightly or dimmed as the Spindit sees fit.

Cave: The most common subtype, these creatures are hairless and typically exhibit darker colors. They are quick and agile, almost catlike in behavior and size, and solitary, building web complexes that trap electricity like an electric fence. They convert this energy into a honey-like substance that they store in their abdomin, to use when food and energy sources are low. The antennae are thin and tuned to detect the slightest vibrations in the web. They tend to be shy but when trained can be very affectionate. Sensitive to light, hoarding behavior common.

Runner: This wild subtype is known for its extreme speed and pack hunting tactics, and is just as adept on six legs as it is on four, using its raptorial forelimbs to spear and snatch prey. Theyr eyes are high on their head, providing a wide field of vision, and their short velvety fur tends to be longest on the ridge of their back. These Spindits show the brightest variation of color, but the purpose for these bright displays are unknown. The antennae are bristly and long, leaving them deaf but highly sensitive to scent, and they rely on their sight above all else to track their prey. Terribly difficult to train, but you will never find a more loyal companion. Protective instincts, aggressive to strangers.

Spark: The smallest subtype, these spindits are partial to colder regions and exhibit muted/pastel colors and patterns. Their fur is extremely fine and soft, and is practically buzzing with static electricity - a defense mechanism that has proved fairly effective. Their wide antennae give them an excellent sense of smell and hearing. They are quite popular as pets due to their small size and docile nature, but their delicate nature and temperature requirements make them difficult to keep, as shearing their fibrous fur leaves them suceptable to hypothermia, even in warmer climates. They are energetic and quite intelligent, making wonderful lifelong companions.
